Information Universe in my Pocket
A single atom in itself is a form of the entire universe. The entire universe is manifested in it. So says one of the best books I have read in my life “An Autobiography of a Yogi”. The human body is made of several atoms is a universe in itself part of the larger universe. And now Rakesh Mathur (Who is this dude? Remember Junglee and Amazon? That rings a bell, right?) decides to atomize our entire information universe in our pockets. Pockets? Yes if you keep your cell phone in your pocket that is. How about sizing a few million terrabytes of data dividing it by 20,000 times and condensing it to your hard disc. Still not happy. Ok how about condensing the data on the topic of your interest in just a few mega bytes that you can download and view on your cell phone. That sounds nice, right? That what Webaroo's latest invention is all about.
Inventions Galore @ net
It’s been more than 30 years since Vinton G Cerf, along with Robert E Kahn, wrote the software (TCP/IP) for connecting computers around the world that gave rise to the Internet. Recently on his visit to India Vinton said “I do not think that more than 1% of the net’s applications have been invented, 99% of applications still lie in the future. I am not sure what they are.”
Internet and the web have completely changed the way enterprise works. Inventions and more inventions. Inventions galore as the information web gets bigger and better. The spirit of enterprise reigns supreme and result is for everybody to see.
The concept of Seamless Search
I wrote about Webaroo while writing about seamless search around a year ago. The article was titled “Browsing the Internet Offline”. Internet literally means an inter connected world but the concept of a world where you have all the information of the internet, your favorite websites and more without even connecting to the net, seemed very interesting. Well that was a year ago and Webaroo has come a long way in the “seamless browsing” domain, a concept that is still not pioneered by any of the search engines that includes the holy trinity of Google, Yahoo and MSN.
The Mobile Experience
The future is the mobile phone. Infact research says that unlike the west most Indians would have their first internet experience on the mobile phone. Now imagine if we could besides browsing also carry tons of information on the topic of our choice in our pockets. Webaroo’s latest offering does exactly that.
Accessing information anywhere anytime Online or Offline
Webaroo’s Web to Go is an innovative mobile software application that delivers fast, free and always-on access to web content on most current mobile phones throughout the world.
The software lets consumers get a wide variety of compelling content such as news, blogs, photos, emails and much more on their mobile phones and access this content even when they’re not connected to the network. The application runs on most Java-enabled phones world-wide including the popular models from Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and others. Data access must be enabled on the phones for the user to download and update the Webaroo application. The application is free to consumers, apart from the data access fees charged by their carriers.
This content is then readily available and can be accessed much faster than traditional browsing. Also, since the content is stored locally, it is available all the time, even when network connectivity is weak or unavailable uses the local phone memory to store snippets of content downloaded from the web.
In addition to content sources such as news and blogs, Webaroo’s application contains “widgets” that users can download specific content from web services such as email servers, social networking sites, search engines, photo sites, weather sites and more. The application also contains pre-packaged content packs such as city guides, celebrity profiles, restaurant finders, and more.
The Last Word
The world is a beautiful place, if only we care to venture out. And now you can actually store the most beautiful part of the world in your pocket. Don’t believe me. Download the Beautiful-World Photoblogs pack and you have the most beautiful parts of the world in your pocket. At 4.22mb free of cost it is worth downloading. If wisdom is what you seek then there is also a Wikipedia download. Imagine you could now be a “walking encyclopedia”. Well done Webaroo, that’s the way to go. Google, Yahoo and MSN you have a lot of catching up to do.
