Airtel the leading mobile telephony provider has joined five leading international companies including Google to build a 10,000 km undersea cable to link Asia and the United States. The high bandwidth cable system that would pump 7.68 terabits of information per second — equivalent to about 9 crore telephone lines — is being called Unity and is estimated to cost $ 300 million (about Rs 1,200 crore). The Unity consortium includes Malaysia’s Global Transit Limited, leading search engine firm Google, Japanese telecom major KDDI Corporation, and Pacnet and SingTel from Singapore. The ultimate aim of the cable is to be able to allow companies to send large amounts of data across the world at a lower price. Consortium companies will utilize a five fiber pair cable system, which can be upgraded to eight fiber pairs later down the road.

ET Life a reality?

(BBC)

According to a report Rocky planets, resembling Earth could be found around most sun like stars in our galaxy, a new research suggests, raising scientists’ hopes that they will someday find extra-terrestrial or at least primitive life beyond our solar system.

Using, NASA’s Spitzer Telescope, Michael Meyer of the University of Arizona discovered that at least 20 percent and possibly up to 60 percent of stars similar to the Sun could potentially have rocky planets in orbit around them.

In a report in BBC Helen Briggs said there may also be hundreds of undiscovered worlds in outer parts of our Solar System, astronomers believe.

Future studies of such worlds will radically alter our understanding of how planets are formed, they say.

New findings about planets were presented at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Boston.

First Yahoo rejected Microsoft’s bid in a bid to increase the offer bid now Microsoft rejects Yahoo rejection! Is Microsoft the big daddy? Is Yahoo just bidding for a few dollars more to sell itself?

According to Jeff Gamet, Microsoft responded to Yahoo’s take over bid rejection with a rejection of its own on Monday. The Redmond-based company said in a statement that it feels “moving forward promptly to consummate a transaction” will best serve both companies.

Microsoft executives did not say what the company’s next step would be. At this point it could counter with an offer that comes in above the original US$31 a share, or $44.6 billion, offer, or it could try to sway shareholders and move for a hostile takeover.

“The Yahoo response does not change our belief in the strategic and financial merits of our proposal. As we have said previously, Microsoft reserves the right to pursue all necessary steps to ensure that Yahoo!Õs shareholders are provided with the opportunity to realize the value inherent in our proposal,” Microsoft said.

Microsoft presented the Yahoo with an unsolicited buy out offer on February 1 after the Internet search company reported a 23 percent drop in earnings. Yahoo responded on Monday by stating if felt Microsoft was “substantially undervaluing” the company.
