IBM Expands Deep in India

IBM India today announced the launch of the SME operations in Jamshedpur, as part of its expansion plans to enter 14 new cities in the country. This would enable IBM to cater to specific requirements to enable customized services to SMB clients spread across Jamshedpur and neighboring markets. IBM envisions setting new standards of excellence through these newly opened centres.

Marking a new phase of Intel’s World Ahead Program, an alliance of 16 companies has formed to expand Intel’s efforts to provide people in developing countries with the benefits of technology.

During a visit that coincides with the country’s observance of “Teachers Day,” Intel Corporation Chairman Craig Barrett announced the formation of the World Ahead Alliance in India. The alliance pledges to apply technology to advance health, education and rural empowerment. Barrett also announced that Intel India has signed an agreement with the New Delhi affiliate of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to create a partnership focused on advancing Intel’s education initiatives. Courage in management

Larry’s Column

Last week I came across a profound quote by Robert Townsend, former CEO of Avis Rent-a-Car and author of the 1970 best seller, “Up the Organization.” He said, “When you get right down to it, one of the most important tasks of a manager is to eliminate his people’s excuses for failure.”

How insightful, how meaningful, how true, and perhaps most important, how courageous. Townsend knew that managing is not just throwing a task at someone and waiting for the results. “Eliminating excuses for failure” requires proactive planning. It takes defining the task, helping the person determine the action steps necessary to complete the task successfully, discovering and finding needed resources, advising from experience and expertise, monitoring progress, being an active cheerleader, removing pitfalls, and giving credit when the work is accomplished. All along the way, the successful manager is eliminating excuses for failure. Read more
