Dad’s Day Special - Origin of Father’s Day

In most countries, Father’s Day is celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of June and this year it’s even more special as the celebrated day observes its 100th anniversary on June 20th. This observation was the inspiration of Sonora Smart Dodd. On a visit to her church in Spokane, Washington, the congregation was honoring mothers and the idea for an official Fathers’ Day came to her.

What prompted her to talk about an official Fathers’ Day observance was that her father, a Civil War veteran, had sacrificed a lot in raising her and his five sons alone following the death of her mother. To Mrs. Dodd that was an outstanding achievement given the hardships her father had endured on an eastern Washington farm.

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson and his family observed the day. Eventually in 1972, 62 years after it was proposed President Nixon proclaimed Fathers’ Day officially.
